Home > Television > Spoiler Warning! > The Newsroom spoiler: ?Unintended Consequences? might reveal what really happened in Africa
July 29th, 2013.
When The Newsroom premiered its second season a few weeks back, Maggie (Alison Pill) had a shocking new haircut, and Will (Jeff Daniels) tried to explain it vaguely by referring to her field time in Uganda.
The next episode, ?Unintended Consequences?, might just takes us back to that mysterious time and shed some light on what happened that would prompt Maggie for a drastic physical makeover.
The promo video starts with Rebecca Halliday (Marcia Gay Harden) introducing herself and starting her session with the question: ?Tell me about Africa?. The next few shots tease that Maggie witnessed something far more dangerous than what she intended to cover.
Meanwhile, Jim (John Gallagher) continues to rant about the complacency of the Mitt Romney journalists, with Hallie (Grace Gummer) listening ? probably figuring out if she made a mistake siding with him and getting thrown off the press bus.
Neal (Dev Patel) is denied access to a possible source/witness ? and while it?s not clear, it may have something to do with Occupy Wall Street, or Operation Genoa.
Check out the video below:
Here?s a brief synopsis released by the network:
Maggie tries to convince Rebecca that she is fine; a protestor refuses to cooperate with Neal and Jerry after an interview with Will goes poorly; Jim gets heat from Mac.

Kim is a TV fanatic who has the ability to find time to sit and watch her favorite shows, when she probably should be doing something else.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Beauty is in the eye of the Google Glass wearer.
At least that's what the Internet search giant hopes a handful of young filmmakers will discover. Google is enlisting film students from five colleges to help it explore how its wearable computing device can be used to make movies.
The $1,500 Google Glass headset is already being used by 10,000 so-called explorers. The device resembles a pair of glasses and allows users to take pictures, shoot video, search the Internet, compose email and check schedules.
As part of its experiment, Google will lend each school three pairs of Google Glass.
The participating schools are American Film Institute, California Institute of the Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, University of California, Los Angeles, and University of Southern California.
Google Inc. says it plans to share an update of how students are progressing sometime after school resumes in the fall.
The company says the schools will explore how to use Glass for documentary filmmaking, character development, location-based storytelling and "things we haven't yet considered."
Norman Hollyn, a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, said students will be encouraged to use Glass to tell stories incorporating the first-person point of view.
He said one model that students might follow is one explored in the film, "Timecode," by director Mike Figgis, which uses four cameras to capture four different people simultaneously. Students will also be encouraged to try to use Glass's data overlays as a way of revealing elements of a story. At least two short films are expected to be done by the beginning of next year, he said.
"We're kind of looking at it as, 'How can we push this to tell stories rather than just sit on a cool Disneyland ride and broadcast that out to people?'" he said. "This excited us in a lot of ways."
Glass users can shoot video in "720p" high-definition quality by issuing voice or touch commands.
Google has already shown off a few examples of how people are using the device, such as tennis pro Bethanie Mattek-Sands preparing for Wimbledon and physics teacher Andrew Vanden Heuvel taking his class on a virtual field trip to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

A traditional signature-based antivirus utility checks files against a database of malware signatures. Behavior-based monitors detect malware by looking for signs of malicious activity. Anti-Executable 5.0 ($45, direct) takes a much simpler approach. Any program that's not on the list of permitted applications just can't run, period. Version 5.0 streamlines the user experience a bit, but it still has a few quirks.
Think of your antivirus utility as the doorman at a fancy nightclub. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus (2014) includes traditional signature-based detection; that's like a doorman with a list of undesirables who are banned from the club. The behavior-based SONAR detection built into Norton AntiVirus (2013) is like a doorman who sizes up the crowd and only lets in well-behaved patrons. As for Anti-Executable, it's the guy who just growls, "You're not on the list!"
In addition to the Standard edition reviewed here, Faronics offers a version specifically tuned for use on servers. There's also a centrally managed version designed for Enterprises. But at the core of all three is the same "default deny" technology.
Getting Started
The download package for Anti-Executable includes the PDF-based documentation, and you'd do well to read it before proceeding with installation. That way you'll know why you're being prompted to define an Administrator User password and a Trusted User password, and what it means if you check the "Include DLL files when creating control list" box.
The install process has changed since the last edition. Previously, you could choose whether or not to have Anti-Executable scan your system and add files to the whitelist. Opting out of that initial scan left you with a blank whitelist, meaning every program would be blocked. Sensibly, the current version always runs an initial scan.
Anti-Executable does assume that your system is malware-free. Its initial scan whitelists absolutely every program it finds, without considering whether it's malware or not. For best protection, you'll want to pre-scan the system with a free, tough cleanup tool like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.70, Comodo Cleaning Essentials 6, or Norton Power Eraser.
As for including DLLs in the scan, doing so will help protect against threats like malicious Browser Helper Objects that don't run from an .EXE file. You can also set it to monitor Java JAR files. In theory, increasing the types of files tracked might affect performance, but I didn't notice any difference.
Execution Control List
The previous edition's separate whitelist and blacklist are now merged into a single Execution Control List. As noted, by default Anti-Executable whitelists every file it finds in a scan. You can go through the list and set it to block specific programs if necessary. Not sure about a file? From the list you can launch a Google search, or look it up in the Faronics Identifile database.
Note that if you check the box to include DLL files, you'll need to update the list. Otherwise launching an authorized executable could trigger dozens of alerts for not-yet-authorized DLLs used by that executable. Just click the Add button, select all relevant drives, and re-run the scan. You can also scan any particular folder and allow or block all found items in that folder, or in that folder and its subfolders.
There's an option to mark any executable on the list as Trusted. That means it's permitted to launch other executable files that aren't whitelisted. This seems a bit dangerous to me; I'd think twice before checking the Trusted box.
You can also whitelist files by publisher; just click Show Publishers and run a scan. Faronics sensibly removed the ability block publishers, since any program not explicitly allowed won't run. This edition also gives you granular control over publisher-based whitelisting. Most often, you'll whitelist all files signed by the specified publisher. Now, though, you can also whitelist based on the product name, the filename, and even the specific file versions. I'm not seeing the value of control at this level of detail; perhaps it's more significant in Enterprise settings.

A small school district in Arkansas will arm 20 volunteer teachers and staff with handguns starting in the fall, reigniting debate about the best way to protect children in schools.
The district will be the first in the state to arm teachers and is doing so under a state law that allows licensed, armed security guards on campus. The school?s participants in the program, whose identities will be kept secret, will be considered security guards after undergoing 53 hours of training.
"The plan we've been given in the past is, 'Well, lock your doors, turn off your lights and hope for the best,' " Superintendent David Hopkins told the Associated Press. "That's not a plan.?
RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about the Second Amendment? A quiz.
Mr. Hopkins said a wave of parent calls after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings last December caused him to reevaluate their procedures, even though the town of 9,200 people about 100 miles northwest of Little Rock isn't known for being dangerous.
State officials have not blocked the plan, even though Arkansas Education Commissioner Tom Kimbrell has said that he opposes arming teachers and staff. Instead, he supports hiring law enforcement officers as school resource officers.
Participating staff in Clarksville?s schools will be given a one-time $1,100 stipend to purchase a handgun and holster. The district will pay about $50,000 for ammunition and for training by Nighthawk Custom Training Academy, a private training facility in northwest Arkansas.

?That teacher is going to respond to one thing and one thing alone, and that's someone is in the building either actively or attempting to kill people," Jon Hodoway, director of training for Nighthawk said. "That's it. They're not going to enforce the law. They're not going to make traffic stops. If somebody is outside acting the fool, they're going to call the police."
At a recent training session teachers and administrators practiced using airsoft pellet guns to shoot a student pretending to hold another at gunpoint.
One of the student simulators, Sydney Whitkanack, said she?s not concerned about having teachers or staff armed.
"If they're concealed, then it's no big deal," she said. ?It's not like someone's going to know, 'Oh, they have a firearm.' "
Others, like former president of the Arkansas Education Association Donna Morey, strongly opposed the plan, citing concerns over a student accidentally getting shot or taking a gun.
"We just think educators should be in the business of educating students, not carrying a weapon," she said.
The Clarksville school district is the latest example of localities trying to form responses to the Sandy Hook shooting last December that killed 20 children and six teachers.
Like Clarksville, some districts have decided to beef up armed security, in line with the National Rifle Association?s recommendation for every school to have an armed security guard, police officer, or staff.
In May, a rural Colorado school district voted to allow two top administrators to carry guns. They were able to circumvent Colorado?s gun laws by changing the job title of the superintendent to security officer. In Arizona's Maricopa County, Sheriff Joe Arpaio organized a posse of armed volunteers to patrol local schools, although he drew criticism for hiring a former child-sex offender.
In 2013, seven states passed legislation permitting teachers or administrators to carry guns in schools and more than 30 state legislatures introduced bills that would permit staff members to carry guns in public or private schools, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
But most proposals to arm teachers or staff have failed, even in conservative states more likely to support an expanded role for guns, according to The New York Times.
A key reason for fewer districts arming teachers is the potential cost, according to the Times report. Some insurance companies are declining coverage to schools that allow employees to carry handguns, or are raising their premiums.
In Kansas, for instance, the liability insurance provider for about 90 percent of Kansas school districts said it would not cover schools that permit employees to carry concealed handguns. A dozen Kansas school districts that were considering arming their staff changed their minds after the decision, the state employee who oversees insurance programs at the Kansas Association of School boards told the Times.
?Some [insurance providers] are saying this is so high risk we?re not going to touch it,? Kenneth Trump, the president of National School Safety and Security Services, which discourages districts from implementing concealed carry policies told the Times. ?Others may say this is so high risk that you?re going to pay through the nose.?
? Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.

PETALUMA ? The return of Friedman?s Home Improvement to Petaluma after nearly four decades is moving forward as the site is being prepared for a store in a new 315,000-square-foot mixed-use center in the city.
Santa Rosa-based Ghilotti Construction Company in early July started preparing the 9.5-acre site for a Friedman?s store at Deer Creek Village. The store is scheduled to open in March 2014.
Deer Creek Village (deercreekproject.com), being developed by San Francisco-based Merlone Geier Partners, covers 36.5 acres at the southwest corner of Rainier Avenue and North McDowell Boulevard adjacent to Highway 101.
?Both the Friedman family and MGP owe a special thanks to community leaders and others who championed this project,? said Greg Geertsen, managing partner of Merlone Geier Partners. ?With support from City Council members Mike Healy, Gabe Kearney, Chris Albertson and Mike Harris, Petaluma will benefit from having a local home improvement store and 800 new jobs in this community.?
Deer Creek Village is 60 percent leased, and five tenant lease proposals are in process. It is expected to create 500 permanent retail and office jobs plus 300 construction jobs during the 12- to 18-month building cycle.
The general contractor for the $50 million project is RMC Constructors, Inc., of Fresno. Petaluma-based Midstate Construction served as the construction management firm.
When completed, the development will have 315,000 square feet of retail and office space plus six acres of open space. A new delineation of the wetlands and creek restoration with pedestrian bridges will create a community amenity with walking and cycling paths along with rest and exercise stations.
Friedman?s Home Improvement will have an 80,000-square-foot store, 20,000-square-foot garden center and 35,000-square-foot dry shed to house lumber and building supplies.
?This is the second time Friedman?s has come to Petaluma,? said Barry Friedman, who became president and CEO of the family owned company on June 2. ?The company was founded here, so we feel like we?re coming home again.?
Founded by Joe and Ben Friedman in 1946, Friedman?s opened its first location in rented retail space on East Washington Street. The family opened the Santa Rosa store in 1971 and operated both locations until 1976, when the Petaluma site was closed due to declining building conditions. That structure was later destroyed by fire.
Mr. Friedman said the overall architectural plan of the new Petaluma store, by Anza Design principals Dale Hoover and Joe Harvard, has a dynamic entrance and a three-gable greenhouse that gives this facility an entirely new look and feel compared with the firm?s primary location on Old Redwood Highway in Santa Rosa.
?It?s our first opportunity to establish a new definition of our brand,? Mr. Friedman said.
In his view, Friedman?s has always been a ?customer-focused, community-based business with legendary service and a history of good neighbor-to-neighbor dialogue.? One example of this close relationship is the firm?s response to demand for larger parking spaces.?
?Many of our parking stalls will be a foot wider ? 10 feet wide by 19 feet long ? to accommodate light-duty trucks and contractor vehicles,? said David Proctor, chief financial officer for Friedman?s. ?We will also have 14 to 16 checkout stations in separate areas, including a special checkout exclusively for professional contractors.?
The way customers pay for items outside in the dry shed and yard area is the only difference between how Friedman?s will operate in Petaluma compared with its Santa Rosa location.
?Petaluma has a no-drive-through ordinance, meaning customers cannot pay for their purchases in the yard,? Mr. Proctor said. ?Shoppers will have to prepay inside the store and take the receipt and order tag to the pickup point.?
With concern for the environment, Friedman?s wants its new location to be as sustainable as possible. The dry shed will be equipped for a photovoltaic array on the roof to be installed in the future.
A signature feature of the new Friedman?s store is a pair of 30-foot-square ?living walls? with variety of climbing perennial plants that create a living and changing tapestry. A rain-sensing system will capture and recirculate water to a drip system for those walls.
Passive infrared ?Watt Stopper? dual technology occupancy sensors will help reduce energy use, and skylights throughout the complex will maximize natural sunlight.
A total of 1,277 parking stalls will be built at the village, of which 1,228 are standard, 49 are accessible and 27 are for preferred parking for low-emission and fuel-efficient vehicles. Some 150 bicycle racks also will be provided to encourage alternative travel.
High-efficiency, low-emission heating and cooling air systems will be used throughout the center and Energy Star-certified roofing systems with a high solar reflectivity index will be used to minimize heat gain. Skylights will be deployed when possible.?
Overall, the project is being planned to exceed California?s Title 24 energy requirements and has been built to comply with the Build It Green program in Petaluma.
Dual-flush water closets and low-flow lavatory fixtures will be installed throughout the complex. Drought-tolerant plants and smart irrigation controllers will reduce water consumption.
Nonhazardous construction materials will be recycled or salvaged, and recycled building materials will be used as applicable.
Water quality will be protected with on-site pervious paving surfaces and landscaping bioswales. All the on-site drainage will be captured and treated before being discharged to the creek.

TUNIS (Reuters) - Pro- and anti-government demonstrators clashed in two Tunisian cities on Monday, witnesses said, as tensions rose over opposition efforts to oust the Islamist-led government.
Angry opposition protesters tried to storm municipal offices in Sidi Bouzid and stop employees there from working, residents said, sparking clashes between them and supporters of the Islamist Ennahda party, which leads the transitional government.
The army intervened to protect the offices and police fired tear gas, but residents said thousands of demonstrators were still gathering in the southern city, the cradle of the revolt that overthrew President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.
"Now many of the protesters are coming in carrying batons and it looks like the situation is going to escalate because both sides are standing firm," one resident, Mahdi al-Hurshani, told Reuters by telephone.
Tunisians fear they may be plunging into one of the worst crises in their political transition since Ben Ali was forced to flee by an uprising that inspired unrest across the Arab world.
Opposition leaders say they might set up a rival "salvation government", an idea they will discuss later on Monday.
The secular opposition, angered by the second assassination in its ranks in six months and emboldened by the Egyptian army's ousting of an Islamist president this month, is now rejecting all concessions and reconciliation efforts by the government.
The unrest has erupted just weeks before the transitional Constituent Assembly was set to complete a draft of a new constitution. The opposition now demands that the 217-member body be dissolved. Seventy lawmakers have left it and set up a sit-in outside the Assembly offices in Tunis's Bardo square.
Cabinet ministers will meet on Monday to discuss the growing political crisis, a government official said, and a message from the prime minister to the nation is expected soon.
In Bardo square, rival protesters threw rocks at each other and police intervened to disperse them. Opposition sources said security forces beat one of the 70 lawmakers who had quit the Constituent Assembly. He was taken to hospital.
"The prime minister will be held accountable for any drop of blood spilled in the Bardo sit-in," opposition figure Manji Rahawi said.
Tunisia's powerful labour unions were also set to meet on Monday to discuss more strike action. On Friday, the unions shut down much of the country for a strike to mourn leftist politician Mohamed Brahmi who was assassinated last week.
The government says Brahmi's assailants used the same weapon that killed another secular leader, Chokri Belaid, on February 6.
Its critics say it has not done enough to investigate or stop the attacks it has blamed on hardline Salafist militants.
Many joining the swelling street protests cite anger with the instability in Tunisia as well as economic stagnation.
Others are frustrated that a constitution, promised one year after the 2011 uprising, has yet to be completed and are suspicious of the Islamist-led transitional government.

Dion Hinchliffe posted a modernizing round up of Enterprise 2.0 tools, and I thought it would be useful to highlight:
In short one thing of particular note about Google is just how much they do. When it comes to ?Cloudy, Social, Mobile?, there?s really no one quite like Google.
Enterprise 2.0 on Google ? Take your Google Apps experience into Orbit
First off the value of this suite is illustrated by this list of tools that Dion suggested.
For example not only can Google offer equivalent functions, such as their own Google Drive to match Box, but also they have other tools for the others in the list too.
As this article describes the value of these tools and especially how Google approaches it, is the wholesome integration of social media like features. You have the same file collaboration, and with all the supporting social tools that come from the other parts of the Google environment, like Google+.
And this is just one of the apps contained within their Google Apps office collaboration set, so you have the online apps as you have always used for Word, Excel type collaboration. Except Google does it all online natively, baking in lots of user productivity boosting features and project team organizing tools.
Out of the box you have what is probably the best desktop video collaboration tool, Google Hangouts, which you can also use to produce online events that you stream through Youtube.
So after a first pass you can see a big value of Google they are one supplier who can do many of the things that a list of a bunch of different vendors to achieve elsewhere.
However to be fair it?s also true that to be of full value to the enterprise market Google has to work with and build in product offerings from third-party partners too, so ultimately it?s the same assembly process.
Their core Cloud platform is really great but in some areas is best finalized through add in of a partner application. For example there is no in-built option for a Microsoft Sharepoint alternative, and this is what?Arachno Orbit caters for, an equivalent option to the Sharepoint function Dion describes in his list.
Read more in?this Tech Republic review which?gives an insight what is not only an ability to repeat a Sharepoint type function but also do it better in a more modern, Google Cloud-like way.
Android Everywhere
There are a myriad other plug-in apps as well, so in terms of providing the type of collaboration functionality central to an Enterprise 2.0 strategy, the Google suite is as armed to the teeth as you might imagine.
The story doesn?t stop there though, it gets bigger and better with Google.
As well as providing this type of cool collaboration functionality to users is naturally a goal for CIOs, and so is reducing costs and other business goals.
This is relevant to highlight when we also consider the broader IT landscape a CIO must manage, one that extends out on to devices like smartphones and line-of-business units like parcel trackers. What will be eaten up by the ?Internet of Things?.
As an immediate cost avoidance exercise this means CIOs can take steps like re-consider that enterprise licencing agreement for Microsoft Office. It takes time to wean users from their entrenched habits around Outlook, Word et al, but as this changes and we also see Android the operating system become more prevalent there is a whole shift possible. One that offers big $$ avoidance.
Android devices can be equipped with local apps like Office Suite Pro, to replicate the same MS Office functionality but again more as part of a native Cloud suite.
Longer term there is a continuing role for Android as a distributed OS enabler that can accelerate the deployment of new technology models and services, more sophisticated parcel trackers, and importantly can achieve this by also lowering costs through achieving a greatly reduced technology platform cost as well.
Most importantly this would be achieved by a platform that can offer an end-to-end integrated suite both horizontally, for the Enterprise 2.0 collaboration functionality, as well as vertically, integrating different stack layers (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
That?s a hugely powerful offering that no other vendor can match, not really.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Talk about your struggling college students.
A new report released Monday by the U.S. Census shows that two Florida cities with large concentrations of college students experience big declines in poverty rates when college students aren't counted.
The poverty rate in Gainesville, home of the University of Florida, declines 15.5 percentage points when college students not living with relatives are excluded. In Leon County, home of Florida State University, the dip is 11.5 percentage points.
Both cities have poverty rates significantly higher than the national average of 15.2 percent.
Including college students, more than a third of all residents in Gainesville live below the poverty line. In Tallahassee, it's under a third of all residents.
The report suggests students artificially inflate poverty counts.

It can be quite scary making a real estate purchase, especially if you do not know much about it. The real estate industry, however, is a lucrative one for many people. Read on to find some tips which will help you to choose the right property for you no matter what your level of experience is.
When you have kids, or are planning to start a family in the future, make sure you buy a home that can accommodate everyone. Safety is an important quality for a home to have as well. Consider the stairs and the swimming pool as risks when looking at a home. If the previous owners had kids in the house, it should be safe for you.
Thanks to the Internet, it is easy to research a home and a neighborhood without stepping foot outside your current home. Whether you?re moving to a large city or a small town, there is a good deal of valuable information that you can find on the internet. Make sure that you can live comfortably in a town by researching the population, unemployment rate and salary ranges.
TIP! If you are planning on having a family, look for a house with enough space. Review the house for safety concerns as well, especially if the backyard has a pool or the home has stairs indoors or outside.
If you are making a major commercial property purchase, it is better to have a trusted partner working with you than to try to do it alone. Having a partner makes it easier to get a loan if you need one to purchase the property. Investing with a partner helps to reduce the cost you will have to pay for a down payment, and it can increase your chances of being approved when applying for a large commercial loan.
If you?ve made an offer for a house that seller didn?t take, don?t be discouraged, since you might find a better home. The seller might be willing to meet you half way, cover closing costs, or finalize some repairs. It never hurts to counter offer and ask.
When you buy a home, think about what your life will be like in five or ten years. For instance, ask yourself if you want to have children. If you do, look for a home located in a good school district.
TIP! If you?re thinking about relocating, you may want to consider looking online at the neighborhood of the house you?re thinking of purchasing. There is a lot of info available on the Internet.
Be flexible about the choices you have to make. You probably won?t be able to get everything on your want list, but narrowing it down to a few things you absolutely have to have can give you a lot of what you want. If you cannot afford a home in the neighborhood of your choosing, take time to check if there any homes within your budget available. You may be surprised by what you nearly passed up!
Buying a fixer upper is a great way to save money and invest wisely. This increases the value of your investment by boosting its resale value. Sometimes your property value will increase more than the money you put in.
You must understand well the terms used in mortgage loans before purchasing a home. When you understand how your mortgage term affects your monthly payments, and how it will impact the total cost of your loan, you will minimize any future confusion.
TIP! Don?t give up even if your offer is turned down, as many sellers will search for ways to make it work. They may cover closing costs, or offer to make a few repairs before you move.
You are already aware of an asking price on a potential home, but you should also have your offer firmly in mind. If you are clear and honest in negotiations with the seller, you are more likely to reach an agreement you can both accept with a smile.
Buying and investing in real estate is a huge purchasing decision that will have a dramatic impact on your life. The information that you have just read will help you make educated decisions about buying real estate. It will also help keep you from making some common mistakes as well.
