Cat breeds vary from registry to registry, and from country to country. Sometimes the same cat will be considered a different breed in different places. Some cat breeds are well established, while others are experimental and new, or have nearly disappeared from lack of breeders. Most cats are what are called domestic longhairs, domestic shorthairs, or moggies ? all terms that simply describe a cat that is of no distinct breed or pure bloodline.
Cat breeds vary from the petite Munchkin to the big Norweigan Forest Cat, from the hairless Sphynx to the long, thick coat of a Persian. Perhaps because cats are so independent, and tend to choose their own people and places to stay and are quite ready to simply take themselves elsewhere they are one of the few domesticated animals that we have not tinkered with to extremes. Unlike dogs, which we have bred down to the diminutive chihuahua, and up to the massive Great Dane or horses that vary from draft horses like the Clydesdale to the dainty Miniature Horses, cats have proven quite resistant to selective breeding.
I?ve also heard it said that every trace of a pure cat breed will disappear in only three generations of breeding with non-purebred cats. However, I have seen distinctly Siamese colored and type kittens show up in a litter that did not have a Siamese parent. Manx cats are purposely bred to cats who have normal tails in order to avoid physical problems created by breeding a tailess cat to another tailess cat. And did you know that litters of kittens can have more than one father?
Here is a list of cat breeds that I will be using to write articles about purebred cats for this blog. If you have a favorite breed that you don?t see here, feel free to contact me and tell me about them! You can always email me at sffoovayATgmail.com.
