What's Past is Prologue: a look inside the future of Lockheed Martin

DNP What's Past is Prologue A Look Inside the Future of Lockheed Martin

I receive a terse invite from Lockheed Martin that asks me to take a "glimpse into the future," but it doesn't mention whose future it is. I could write about what I know of the American defense contractor on the back of a postage stamp, but a cursory Google search fills in some of the blanks. The company reportedly receives around 7 percent of the US military budget on its own - and with that, my imagination runs rampant about what I'm likely to see. Dreaming of playing with laser pistols, intelligent cyborgs and giant robots, I tell them I'm coming.

A few days later, I turn up at the Honourable Artillery Company in London's glitzy financial district, a miniature castle that's dwarfed by the gleaming skyscrapers that surround it. In a way, the landscape is telling, since the occupants of those buildings can shoulder some of the blame for the current financial crisis - while across the street, Lockheed Martin is preparing its cost-cutting response.

Two hulking vehicles guard the entrance off a small courtyard, and through a window I see a plush room full of red velvet and leather, stuffed with computers and pensive, well-dressed operators. I wonder if I'm being vetted as I amble inside, my now-sodden socks and matted hair marking me out as unthreatening -- just as long as I promise not to get out my camera. As I'm ushered inside and the tour begins, I'm expecting to see jetpacks and robots, but the reality is much different. Not even this industry is immune to the world's financial problems, and my tour would reveal that its future lies decidedly in our past.

Divorce Causes: 5 Communication Habits That Lead To Divorce

By Deb Dutilh for YourTango.com

Studies show that a lack of communication is the number one reason couples get divorced. Nagging is a major culprit -- relentless reminders, suggestions and advice on how, when and why we should do things. But what are some of the other bad communication habits that erode away at relationships?

1. Inauthenticity. How many times do you catch yourself saying "yes" when you really mean "no?" Do you say, "I don't know" for fear of being judged, dismissed or rejected? When we systematically accept things against our will, shut down to keep the peace and rationalize why that?s okay, we set ourselves up for resentment and anger down the line.

Covering up our feelings and not trusting our partner to be mature enough to manage their response to "no" just won't work. It's better to say, "No, I'm not available to discuss this right now. I need to unwind and think about it. I'll be ready to talk about it in an hour." Then keep your promise.

2. Incongruence. Most of our communication is non-verbal, and when it's out of sync with our words, we are sending mixed messages. No wonder couples argue, get frustrated and eventually tune each other out!

When we say one thing while rolling our eyes, tightening our lips and/or shrugging shoulders, we send another message, usually one of being dismissive, defensive and/or judgmental. One way to avoid this is to maintain eye contact. This ensures active listening and allows you to focus on what the other person is saying instead of considering what you are planning on saying next.

3. Win-lose attitude. In the world of neuro-linguistic programming, we say that effective communication is when your message is not simply sent, but transmitted and received by the listener. When talking about uncomfortable subjects, it's too easy to become judgmental, blaming and defensive -- tactics that all lead to communication breaking down.

Priding yourself on being a pit-bull, taking things personally, finger-pointing, finding fault and needing to have the last word just doesnt work. Instead, set your intention for how you want the conversation to go so both of you win and take some time to really think about all the different possibilities and outcomes. Creating a peace treaty together that sets up the guidelines for communication to ensure smooth, respectful and authentic communication is a great tool.

4. Interrupting, finishing sentences and forgetting to pause. This is a bundle because when you have one you almost always have the other two as well. How many of us have forgotten what we learned in grammar school? Don't interrupt and let the other person take time to formulate an answer. On this level, men and women communicate so differently.

Men often complain that they are still thinking about an answer when their partner starts badgering them for a quicker response or asks another question while they are still thinking about the last one. Take time to pause by counting to 30 before saying anything at all and don't ask several questions at once. And while you're at it, do as we do in France: Roll your tongue around your mouth seven times before you speak.

You might look like a cow chewing your cud but it forces you to slow down and really think about what you're going to say. It might even get a smile in an otherwise tense situation, but at least your partner will feel respected and know that you're patiently giving him to time to respond.

5. Focusing on the negative, and impoliteness. Somewhere along the way, the idea of polite requests -- please, thank you and other words of appreciation in everyday conversations -- have gone the way of the Smith-Corona typewriter. From the classic, "Don't leave the toilet seat up!" to "How long does it take to empty the trash?" -- these commands are the quickest way to send a man to his man cave.

Instead, adopt this simple one-liner that will train any man to jump up and help. "Honey, I feel like a queen when you see the trash can is full and take it out for me! Thank you so much for doing that!" There's nothing wrong with a little over the top appreciation which always works and is the best way to foster open, loving authentic communication.

Scientist claims to have sequenced ?Bigfoot? DNA

A frame from the October 20th, 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film claiming to depict BigfootA Texas scientist claims to have sequenced the DNA of Sasquatch, a creature whose very existence is mysterious to many and purely mythological to most.

"Our study has sequenced 20 whole mitochondrial genomes and utilized next generation sequencing to obtain 3 whole nuclear genomes from purported Sasquatch samples," Dr. Melba S. Ketchum of Nacogdoches, Texas, says in a news release.

"The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to Homo sapiens and other primate species."

Ketchum writes that her team's research indicates the "North American Sasquatch" is a hybrid of a female Homo sapien and a male of "unknown hominin species," whose DNA matched approximately 15,000 years ago.

Sasquatch, more commonly known as Bigfoot, has been a staple of American mythology for hundreds of years. The modern Sasquatch theories took on a newfound prominence in 1958 when the first official Bigfoot search party was launched in California.

Most members of the scientific community have discounted the Sasquatch theory. However, in a Sept. 27, 2002, interview with National Public Radio, Jane Goodall appeared open to the concept, saying, "Maybe they don't exist, but I want them to."

So, how do Ketchum's claims hold up under scrutiny?

The Houston Chronicle's Eric Berger does some unraveling of Ketchum and the claims she made in the news release.

For starters, Berger notes that while Ketchum has 27 years of genetic research experience during her career as a veterinarian, her company, DNA Diagnostics, has received an "F" rating from the Better Business Bureau.

But more important, Ketchum has not allowed scientific peer review of her findings.

"That is a massive red flag. Real research scientists almost never preannounce their research findings," Berger writes. "In effect she is using the mantle of science to confer credibility on her discovery, without actually deserving the credibility."

And finally, where exactly did Ketchum get her DNA sample? After all, if she was working from a reliable source, that alone might be the real story because no physical evidence of Bigfoot exists on record.

As it turns out, Ketchum says her DNA sample was obtained from a blueberry bagel left in the backyard of a Michigan home that, according to the owner, sees regular visits from Sasquatch creatures.

In other words, it seems likely that the legend of Bigfoot will remain more myth than reality for the foreseeable future.

Joe Lieberman: Fiscal Cliff Deal Is 'Not A Certainty'

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) warned Sunday that while congressional hopes remain high to reach an agreement on the so-called fiscal cliff, a deal is "not a certainty."

"Let me just join in the general hopefulness that we're going to avoid the fiscal cliff. But it's not a done deal and it's not a certainty," Lieberman said during an appearance on CNN's "State Of The Union" while discussing the looming fiscal situation. "The government is on automatic pilot to the fiscal cliff, to massive tax increases and really to the horrible spending cuts on January 1 unless we act. If Congress does nothing, which Congress has gotten pretty good at doing these days, we?ll go over the fiscal cliff."

Economists have warned that the combination of increased tax rates and across-the-board spending cuts set to go into effect on January 1 threaten to send the United States into a recession. While President Obama and members of Congress have entered negotiations to avoid the cliff, Republicans and Democrats have yet to reach an agreement.

Obama and congressional Democrats have pledged to let the Bush-era tax cuts for the country's top earners expire. While Republicans like House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) have signaled flexibility on adjusting deductions and closing loopholes, they have taken a firm stance against raising tax rates.

Lieberman, who will retire from the Senate after this term, stressed the need for flexibility as negotiations go forward.

"There's work to be done and compromises to be reached," he said.

PayPal Ready to Join Internet Firms Influx into Dubai

As more and more people across the Middle East get connected online, global internet giants are increasingly focusing the region to power their future growth.

Most of these internet giants have headquartered themselves in Dubai, the undisputed trade and business hub of the region.

Facebook and Linkedin this year opened offices in Dubai?s Internet City, the free zone attracting firms doing business online, while Twitter too has a local representative in the emirate.

Now another internet giant is ready to setup its regional operations in the emirate in order to tap the lucrative Middle East market.

Online Payments giant, PayPal has announced that it will open its regional operations in the emirate over the next two months which will become the hub of its operations in the Middle East.

The Middle East?s online payment market has grown to $ 9 billion but most of the payments are made through cash on delivery which accounts for 80% of the total.

PayPal currently has a 5% share of this sector but expects to grow it to 10% over the next three years by aggressively pushing its online payment platform.

It also will seek to improve its merchant base which currently numbers in the hundreds in order to attract more people to use its online service.

The arrival of the tech giant into the Middle East will be great for online shopping as people already know about PayPal?s brand and its reputation as one of the best online payment solutions providers in the world.

It is also a great opportunity for PayPal to develop a strong foothold in the GCC region which accounts for $ 8 billion of the overall Middle East online payments market.

PayPal last year processed around $ 115 billion worth of transactions and has operations in over 190 countries around the world.

According to The National Elias Ghanem, general manger of PayPal Mena said:

?We are currently looking for offices and will open one in the next few months. It will be the hub for the region.?

Adding further he said:

?Only 15 per cent of [the small and medium sized businesses] in the region have an online presence; this does not mean online payment presence. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone. People will always shift to local marketplaces if the offer exists.?

Dubai has developed a great business environment which continues to attract the leading firms globally who wish to enter into the lucrative Middle East market and the arrival of tech giants will further boost job creation as well as the emirate?s status as a business hub in the region.

I know there are no reservations, but I'd like to let you know that i'll be submitting a form for the Emma Stone FC. All I ask is that you don't hastily accept any characters that apply to that FC before I get mine up.

Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles, I've only gone to rest a little while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am now, but as I used to be. Because, I will remember you all and look on with a smile. Understand, in your hearts, I've only gone to rest a little while.

Mauritanian president returns from France

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) ? Thousands of Mauritanians lined the street from the airport to welcome back President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who went to France for five weeks of medical treatment after being accidentally shot in a friendly fire incident.

His return Saturday puts an end to speculation over the state of his health, as well as over the future of Mauritania. Analysts had warned that his extended departure could create the instability needed for another coup in this desert nation which has suffered six since the 1970s. Aziz, a military general, came to power himself in a 2008 coup.

The 55-year-old leader waved to the crowd, and told reporters that he "at no point worried about a coup d'etat by the army," adding that he had "total confidence in the Mauritania military."

Larry Hagman was a character on screen and off

By Susan C. Young, TODAY.com contributor

Hulton Archive / Getty Images

"Dallas" made Larry Hagman a star, and the latest TNT reboot of the classic show brought him back home to the role and the city he loved.

In January, Hagman appeared at the 2012 Television Critics Association's winter press tour to promote "Dallas" 2.0.?There, he was doing what he did best ? telling a good story. This one was about an old woman coming up to him during his original ?Dallas? years, when his character, the villain J.R. Ewing, was one of the most popular personalities on television:

?She was in a walker and she came up and said, ?You rascal, you. Treating Sue Ellen like that!? and she hit me with her handbag and she knocked me off my chair,? said Hagman, who then got an apology from the woman. ? 'Oh, my husband died recently and I have his pearl-handled six shooter in my bag.' Only time I was pistol-whipped.?

The Fort Worth native's eyebrows were a bit bushier and his face a little more lined than in his younger days, but he still had that mischievous twinkle in his eyes as he talked to reporters about reprising his role as the most notorious bad guy on television in the new ?Dallas.?

He was 80 years old then, and he had just announced he was dealing with throat cancer.

The actor died Nov. 23 at age 81 from complications from his battle with the disease. His family -- including wife Maj Axelsson, whom he married in 1954 -- was by his side in Dallas, where he was working on season two of the revival. Axelsson was the one who convinced him to take on the role of J.R. Ewing because, as she told Hagman, "there isn't one redeeming character in the whole script."

?Even though ?(I Dream of) Jeannie? is on everywhere on cable, only the older folks remember me from that,? Hagman said of his character, Maj. Anthony Nelson, at TCA. ?But everyone remembers J.R. Ewing and ?Dallas.? ??

He said people love the nasty guy for a very basic reason:??Everybody has a jerk like this in the family. That?s what makes him so appealing. Everybody knows who he is.?

A character in real life
The actor?s eccentric ways were well known. He once appeared as a guest at the annual TCA awards show wearing a suit that looked like something he wore back in the day when shooting ?Dallas? during its epic 1978-1991 run.

Turned out it was.

And as he chatted with reporters before the ceremony, he talked about grabbing the old suit out of his closet to wear. He then fished out an elaborate pillbox from his pocket.

?Victoria (Principal) gave this to me for Christmas one year,? Hagman said of his ?Dallas? co-star. ?I must have put it in my pocket that night and I forgot what I did with it. Now it?s like I have a new present from her.?

Earlier in his career, Hagman started observing a silent day once a week. He would not speak to anyone for 24 hours.

?I did it because I was doing ?Jeannie? and I would go out and party on the weekend. I was at a rodeo with all the dust and horse s--- blowing around and I got a sore throat,? Hagman told reporters. ?My doctor told me not to talk for the rest of the weekend and I liked it so much, I did it for one day each week for the next 20 years.

?It was a great way to get a lot of attention,? he explained. ?People are brought into your bubble and they have to concentrate on you in order to communicate. I loved it.?

Though the actor was diagnosed with liver cancer in 1995 and later underwent a liver transplant after years of heavy drinking, Hagman never expected to live forever, just to live the life he had.

?I?m never bored. I?m back in the role I loved, doing what I love and with the people I love,? Hagman said of resurrecting J.R. for the ?Dallas? reboot. ?I?m having a great time.?

The actor filmed six of 15 episodes for the second season of TNT's "Dallas" reboot before he passed away. The new season premieres on Jan. 28.

Irish editor resigns following criticism over Princess Kate pics

The Sept. 15, 2012 edition of the Irish Daily Star had topless pictures of Britain's Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.

By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

The editor of the Irish Daily Star has resigned following an internal investigation into his tabloid?s decision to publish topless photos of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, while she was sunbathing in the south of France, the Irish Times reported.

Michael O?Kane, the editor, was suspended in September after investors of Independent Star Limited, the paper?s parent company, demanded O?Kane be removed from his position. Richard Desmond, whose Northern and Shell company co-owns the paper, demanded that the paper be shut down, according to the Times.

Following O?Kane?s resignation Saturday, the editors at the Irish Daily Star expressed a different view of the situation, according to itv.com: ?Mr. O?Kane acted at all times in a highly professional and appropriate manner and in the best interests of the newspaper,? they said in a statement.

The blurry, long-lens photos of the princess and her husband, William, were originally published in Closer, a French magazine. At the time, a statement from St. James? Palace in London said the couple was ?hugely saddened? by the publication. The royals contended they had ?every right to privacy in the remote house? where they were sunbathing.

The statement from St. James? Palace even drew a comparison to Princess Diana, William's mother and the Princess of Wales: ?The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to The Duke and Duchess for being so.?

The images were not published in Britain, nor were they published in the Northern Ireland editions of the Irish Daily Star. Northern Ireland remains under British rule.

Both co-owners of the Irish Daily Star had criticized O?Kane?s decision to publish the photos but the Independent News and Media, which has holdings in Ireland, Northern Ireland and South Africa, ultimately decided that shutting down the paper would be unnecessarily extreme, according to the BBC.

Catalonia election tests Spanish unity

BARCELONA, Spain (Reuters) - Voters in Spain's Catalonia region go to the polls on Sunday and are likely to elect a pro-independence leader who will test Spanish unity at a time of deep economic crisis.

Opinion polls show two-thirds of voters in this region on the French border will cast ballots for parties, both rightist and leftist, that want Catalan independence from Spain.

Catalan President Artur Mas will likely win re-election since his conservative Convergence and Union party is forecast to take a majority, some 62 to 64 seats, in the 135-seat regional assembly, or Parliament.

Frustration over high unemployment and a deep recession have fueled a separatist resurgence in Catalonia, where polls show that for the first time more than half of the people want to break away from Spain.

Many Catalans believe their economy would be more prosperous on its own, complaining that a high portion of their taxes go to the central government in Madrid.

Mas, who adopted the independence cause in September after a massive street demonstration, campaigned on a promise to hold a referendum on secession.

If he carries through with the pledge, it will put him on a collision course with Madrid, where Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will use the constitution to block a referendum.

"Catalonia has never faced elections this important," Mas said at a campaign rally this week. He told supporters he wanted to be the last president of Catalonia within Spain.

A strong mandate for Mas and other Catalan independence leaders from the left will undermine Rajoy's mission to persuade investors of Spain's fiscal and political stability.

Spain's deep recession and high public deficit have put it at the heart of the euro zone debt crisis and the government's borrowing costs are painfully high.

Alicia Sanchez-Camacho, the candidate for Rajoy's People's Party in Catalonia has campaigned on a message that leaving Spain and the European Union would lead to economic disaster. The PP is vying to be the second biggest party in the Catalan Parliament with opinion polls forecasting it will win 17 seats.

"Don't stay at home (on election day) if you don't want them to kick us out of Spain and out of Europe," she said at a campaign rally this week.

Polls open at 0800 GMT and close at 1900 GMT.

IDENTITY AND ECONOMY

In the rest of Spain the Catalan secession drive is viewed with disbelief and suspicion. Many Spaniards fear that if Catalonia moves to break away, the Basques could soon follow.

Like Basques, Catalans speak their own language and have always seen themselves as distinct from the rest of Spain.

The land of surrealist painter Salvador Dali and architect Antoni Gaudi prides itself on a regional character that blends pragmatism and idealism.

Home to car factories and banks that generate one fifth of Spain's economic wealth, Catalonia also has one of the world's most successful football clubs, FC Barcelona.

This year at Barcelona's famous Camp Nou stadium fans started a new tradition. They chant "independence" at every game when the clock hits 17 minutes and 14 seconds - 1714 being the last year that Catalonia was under the Crown of Aragon before the Bourbon King Philip V united most of what is now Spain into one kingdom.

Catalan independence movements have waxed and waned over the centuries. Secessionism had been politically dead since Spain returned to democracy and gave its 17 autonomous regions significant self-governing power in the 1978 Constitution.

But now there is a widespread perception among Catalans that autonomy did not go far enough and the region is treated unfairly. Most supporters of Mas's CiU party say the tax system drains resources from their region and that Madrid has refused to negotiate improvements.

Even though the Catalan treasury is broke and Mas has had to cut spending on schools and hospitals, many people in the region still blame Madrid for their woes.

"It's like a marriage, when things are good then everything is fine, but when things go bad then you see if there really is any love there," said Elias Banares, the 35-year-old owner of a shop that sells prams. He plans to vote for CiU.

The political mood has driven demand for "esteladas," a flag that symbolises the independence movement, with a lone star against the red and yellow stripes of the official Catalan banner.

The "estelada," once too politically risky for most Catalans to fly, now waves all over the Catalan capital, the Mediterranean port city of Barcelona.

"In two weeks we've sold more than in the last eight years. Amazing figures," said Margarita Bascompte, owner of a family business that makes the flags in the city of Vic, in the heart of the most pro-independence province of Catalonia.

Clashes erupt across Egypt over Morsi's new powers

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of opponents of Egypt's Islamist president clashed with his supporters in cities across the country Friday, burning several offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, in the most violent and widespread protests since Mohammed Morsi came to power, sparked by his move to grant himself sweeping powers.

The violence, which left 100 people injured, reflected the increasingly dangerous polarization in Egypt over what course it will take nearly two years after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Critics of Morsi accused him of seizing dictatorial powers with his decrees a day earlier that make him immune to judicial oversight and give him authority to take any steps against "threats to the revolution". On Friday, the president spoke before a crowd of his supporters massed in front of his palace and said his edicts were necessary to stop a "minority" that was trying to block the goals of the revolution.

"There are weevils eating away at the nation of Egypt," he said, pointing to old regime loyalists he accused of using money to fuel instability and to members of the judiciary who work under the "umbrella" of the courts to "harm the country."

Clashes between his opponents and members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood erupted in several cities. In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, anti-Morsi crowds attacked Brotherhood backers coming out of a mosque, raining stones and firecrackers on them. The Brothers held up prayer rugs to protect themselves and the two sides pelted each other with stones and chunks of marble, leaving at least 15 injured. The protesters then stormed a nearby Brotherhood office.

State TV reported that protesters burned offices of the Brotherhood's political arm in the Suez Canal cities of Suez, Ismailia and Port Said, east of Cairo.

In the capital Cairo, security forces pumped volleys of tear gas at thousands of pro-democracy protesters clashing with riot police on streets several blocks from Tahrir Square and in front of the nearby parliament building.

Tens of thousands of activists massed in Tahrir itself, denouncing Morsi and chanting "Leave, leave" and "Morsi is Mubarak ... Revolution everywhere." Many of them represented Egypt's upper-class, liberal elite, which have largely stayed out of protests in past months but were prominent in the streets during the anti-Mubarak uprising that began Jan. 25, 2011.

"We are in a state of revolution. He is crazy of he thinks he can go back to one-man rule," one protester, Sara Khalili, said of Morsi.

"If the Brotherhood's slogan is 'Islam is the solution' ours is 'submission is not the solution'," said Khalili, a mass communications professor at the American University in Cairo. "God does not call for submission to another man's will."

Frustration had been growing for months with Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, who came to office in June. Critics say the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, has been moving to monopolize power and that he has done little to tackle mounting economic problems and continuing insecurity, much less carry out deeper reforms.

Morsi's supporters, in turn, say he has faced constant push-back from Mubarak loyalists and from the courts, where loyalists have a strong presence. The courts have been considering a string of lawsuits demanding the dissolution of the Islamist-dominated assembly writing the next constitution. The courts already dissolved a previous version of the assembly and the Brotherhood-led lower house of parliament.

Morsi made his move Thursday, at a time when he was bolstered by U.S. and international praise over his mediating of a cease-fire ending a week of battles between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Only a day earlier, Morsi had met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton just before the truce was announced.

Mustafa Kamel el-Sayyed, a Cairo University political science professor, said Morsi may be confident that the U.S. won't pressure him on his domestic moves. "The U.S. administration is happy to work with an Islamist government (that acts) in accordance with U.S. interests in the region, one of which is definitely the maintaining of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel" and protecting Israel's security.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Friday that Morsi's declarations "raise concern for many Egyptians and for the international community."

The U.S. calls for Egyptians to "resolve their differences over these important issues peacefully and through democratic dialogue," she said.

On Thursday, Morsi unilaterally issued amendments to the interim constitution that made all his decisions immune to judicial review or court orders. He gave similar protection to the constitutional panel and the upper house of parliament, which is dominated by the Brotherhood and also faced possible disbanding by the courts.

Morsi, who holds legislative as well as executive powers, also declared his power to take any steps necessary to prevent "threats to the revolution," public safety or the workings of state institutions. Rights activists warned that the vague ? and unexplained ? wording could give him even greater power than those Mubarak held under emergency laws throughout his rule.

The decree would be in effect until a new constitution is approved and parliamentary elections are held, not expected until the Spring.

The state media described Morsi's decree as a "corrective revolution," and supporters presented the move as the only way to break through the political deadlock preventing the adoption of a new constitution.

Amnesty International said the new powers "trample the rule of law and herald a new era of repression." It said a new "law protecting the revolution" also announced Thursday could provide for detaining people for up to six months without charge.

Prominent Egyptian democracy activist Mohamed ElBaradei called Morsi a "new pharaoh." The president's one-time ally, the April 6 movement, warned that the polarization could bring a "civil war."

One of Morsi's aides, Coptic Christian thinker Samer Marqous, resigned to protest the "undemocratic" decree.

"This is a crime against Egypt and a declaration of the end of January revolution to serve the interest of the Muslim Brotherhood dictatorship," wrote Ibrahim Eissa, chief editor of daily Al-Tahrir. "The revolution is over and the new dictator has killed her."

In front of the presidential palace, Muslim Brotherhood supporters and other Islamists chanted "the people support the president's decree," pumping their fists in the air.

"God will humiliate those who are attacking our president, Mohammed Morsi," said ultraconservative cleric Mohammed Abdel-Maksoud. "Whoever insults the sultan, God humiliates him," he added.

In rival protests in the southern city of Assiut, ultraconservative Islamists of the Salafi tend and former Jihadists outnumbered liberal and leftists, such as the April 6 youth groups. The two sides exchanged insults and briefly scuffled with firsts and stones.

With his decrees, Morsi was playing to widespread discontent with the judiciary. Many ? even Brotherhood opponents ? are troubled by the presence of so many Mubarak era-judges and prosecutors, who they say have failed to strongly enough prosecute the old regime's top officials and security forces for crimes including the killing of protesters.

In his decrees, Morsi fired the controversial prosecutor general and created "revolutionary" judicial bodies to put Mubarak and some of his top aides on trial a second time for protester killings. Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for failing to stop police from shooting at protesters, but many were angry he was not found guilty of actually ordering the crackdown during the uprising against his rule.

In his speech Friday. Morsi told supporters that his decisions were meant to stop those "taking shelter under judiciary."

He said the courts had been about to disband the upper house of parliament.

"This is minority but they represent a threat to the revolution's goals," he said. "It is my duty, if I see this, to go forward along the path of the revolution and prevent any blockage."

Nexus 4 shown working on Canadian LTE through simple carrier menu code video

Want LTE on your new Nexus 4? Well, you might have to move country. Unless it's some elaborate post-Thanksgiving hoax from our Canadian neighbors, several Telus customers have demonstrated that the LTE chip hiding inside the Nexus 4 does work, and have connected to some data speeds resembling a 4G connection. This was enabled through the test menu, accessed by dialing "*#*#4636#*".

Tapping on the preferred network type option, you can select either LTE on its own, or a mix of LTE, GSM and CDMA. According to the videos, the Google phone then taps into your carrier's LTE network if Band 4 is available, and you're good to go. We've so far been unable to replicate it in the UK, which doesn't use the same LTE Band 4 (AWS 2100 / 1700MHz) of Canadian carriers Bell, Rogers and Telus. We have also tested this with AT&T's LTE, but had no luck there either -- we tried it in a Band 17 area, not a Band 4 area (which is less common). This is, however, great news for T-Mobile customers as this is precisely the type of LTE they'll be getting very soon. But for now, there's two working videos already doing the rounds from Canada and we've included them both below.

[Thanks Kaung]

Shopping and Product Reviews: Christmas Holidays Made Easy ...

We have all watched the many comical holiday movies that depict their characters rushing around during the holidays to get everything done last minute in a mad and sometimes unsuccessful fury. The Christmas holidays do not have to be a maddening and frantic endeavour filled with stress and fatigue. There are some very easy ways to have yourself a very Merry and relaxing Christmas with just a little planning and organization.

The first step is to set up a budget for gifts, food and decorations and stick to it. Base your budget on what you can afford to spend and avoid racking up those credit cards. After all financial stress can really put a damper on your holiday spirit. If you want to buy that special someone or the family a big ticket item then set up a savings account and save up throughout the year to purchase it outright. There's truly no better feeling than knowing that you can actually afford a wonderful gift for those you care about.

It's a good Idea to make a list of friends and family to buy for and make gift idea notes to help guide you when shopping. Shop as early as possible and avoid waiting until the last two weeks before Christmas for main gift purchases. There's bound to be some small shopping trips for last minute stocking stuffers and food purchases but having the main shopping done before the malls get busy can really lower your stress. The best times to shop are early in the morning or later in the evening and its best to avoid shopping on weekends during December as the malls will be packed and hectic. For those hard to buy for people start looking for gifts throughout the year and research online for helpful gift ideas. Shopping online for gifts if possible, is a great way to reduce holiday shopping stress and get substantial discounts. You can browse for gift ideas in online flyers and you will find that most online products are usually more likely to be in stock. Most online retailers have free shipping if you spend over a certain amount and will deliver right to your door which is very convenient.

Make a list of all the holiday food you will need and purchase it in late November early December so you are organized and do not have to keep running out for forgotten items at the last minute. Buying the ingredients and freezing holiday baking early in December ready for the holidays is the best way to prepare all those family favorite goodies. There are many breakfast recipes online that can be prepared on Christmas Eve, refrigerated and cooked in the oven while opening gifts on Christmas morning. I recommend the breakfast surprise recipes with eggs, bacon, breadcrumbs and cheese as they are easy to make and will be ready in about 1 hour just as everyone is getting hungry after opening gifts.

Wrapping a few gifts a night during the two weeks before Christmas is much easier and less stressful than trying to wrap them all on Christmas Eve. If you decorate do a little bit each day for a week rather than trying to do it all in one day. Put up your Christmas lights early on a dry day even if you don't have them turned on until closer to Christmas. Then you won't have to try and fit it in during the busy holiday season or have to put them up last minute in the cold, rain, or snow. Think about banking time or booking holidays off of work if it's an option for you earlier in October or November so you can ensure you get the time off preferably with pay. Clean your home thoroughly and tidy/ organize things a week or two before Christmas.

Our families special secret weapon for saving a lot of money and being prepared for Christmas well in advance is to purchase Christmas cards, lights and decorations after Christmas at up to 75% off to use for next Christmas and years to come. If you follow these guidelines your holiday season should be substantially less stressful and much more relaxing and family oriented, after all family and friends are what Christmas is all about.

Thanksgiving is a Day for Relationships! | Vitaerobics

Thanksgiving is a time for friends and family, food and drink, football and parades. Enjoy them all, but remember to put relationships at the top of your list.

In the past, we have often said, ?make relationships the ?main course,? and food the ?side dish,?? and that?s especially true on holidays like Thanksgiving. It doesn?t really matter what you eat as long as you?re surrounded by the ones you love.

We will be having Thanksgiving dinner with my sister and her family, as well as assorted other friends and relatives. The other day, when I spoke with my sister, she asked if there was any particular side dish or food that I wanted with Thanksgiving dinner. The question struck me as odd.

Don?t get me wrong ? it was very generous for her to ask, but I just don?t think about the food much at all. Sure, I love cranberries, sweet potatoes, and all the other traditional Thanksgiving ?fixins.? But the relationships are so much more important. It really doesn?t matter to me what I eat as long as I?m with friends and family.

So, this holiday, don?t worry about what you?re eating. Instead be thankful for the relationships you have, and enjoy the day. Look for opportunities to build new relationships and reinforce old ones. And, enjoy the meal too!

Remember, healthy choices each day can transform families for generations! What choices will you make today?

Do You Wish Your Kid?s Ate Better? Check out our FREE eBook at www.HealthyFamilyFuture.com. Many of the strategies in this book can be used by both children and adults.
