State colleges: BYU beats Saint Mary?s in baseball to win 3-game series

Moraga, Calif ? Austin Hall was 4-for-5 with a triple and an RBI, and Adam Miller allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings for his first win of the season to lead BYU over Saint Mary?s 7-3 in baseball Saturday. Tanner Chauncey was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Jaycob Brugman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Cougars (4-2, 2-1 West Coast Conference).

"When [Miller] has two pitches working, that is all he needs as hard as he throws, " BYU coach Vance Law said.? "I?m pleased with way he has pitched the last two games."

UNLV 9, Utah 2; Nebraska 15, Utah 0 ? In Corpus Christi, Texas, the Utes lost their fourth and fifth straight games Saturday. In Game 1, Tyson Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Utes (1-6). In Game 2, Jon Keller allowed just two hits in seven innings for the Cornhuskers, who scored five runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Nevada 9, Utah Valley 1 ? In Reno, Nev., Tyler Wells allowed just two hits in 61?3 innings as the Wolf Pack limited UVU to three hits. Goose Kallunki was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Wolverines (1-5).

Dixie State 0-8, Cal Baptist 7-4 ? In Riverside, Calif., the Red Storm split a doubleheader Saturday, losing the first game 7-0 and winning the second 8-4. Jordan Hanley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Mitch Manning went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Dixie State (8-4, 8-4 Pacific West Conference), which scored five runs in the first inning.

Note ? The Southern Utah doubleheader at Texas Pan-American was postponed Saturday because of rain. The teams will play a doubleheader Sunday.

Utah 14, Rider 2 (6 innings); Utah 3, UNC Greensboro 1 ? In Greensboro, N.C., the Utes improved to 3-0 at the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic with two victories Saturday. In Game 1, Kelsi Hoopiiaina hit a three-run homer and Jackie Sweet was 3-for-3 with three runs and four RBIs for the Utes. In Game 2, Generra Nielson went the distance, striking out 16 while allowing just three hits and one earned run for Utah (9-3).

SLCC 11-13, Southern Nevada 3-6 ? No. 2-ranked Salt Lake Community College swept Southern Nevada in a doubleheader Saturday, winning 11-3 in five innings and 13-6. The Bruins also swept a doubleheader Friday, winning 8-2 and 8-0 to improve to 22-5 and 13-3 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play. In Game 1, Malia Campos was 4-for-4 with two triples and Trina Gomez went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases. In Game 2, Maddy Woodard was 4-for-5 with five RBIs.

Southern Utah 3-13, Weber State 6-4 ? In Cedar City, the Thunderbirds and Wildcats split a doubleheader Saturday, with Weber State winning the first game, 6-3, and SUU winning the second, 13-4, in five innings. In Game 1, Lyndsey Minnich hit a three-run homer in the Wildcats? (4-8) four-run seventh inning. In Game 2, Tessa Loewen was 3-for-3 and hit a three-run homer for the Thunderbirds (5-7).

Western Carolina 6, Utah Valley 5; Utah Valley 6, Marist 3 ? In Greensboro, N.C., the Wolverines finished 1-1 Saturday, losing their first game 6-5 and winning their second 6-3. In Game 1, Amanda Robinson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Wolverines, whose rally fell short in the top of the seventh inning. In Game 2, Robinson went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for UVU (5-4).

Gymnastics

Provo ? BYU earned its second win of the season, beating in-state rivals Southern Utah and Utah state. The Cougars scored 194.100, with SUU second (193.925) and USU third (193.625). Raquel Willman won her first all-around of the season, finishing with a score of 39.275. She set career highs on the vault (9.875), the beam (9.825) and the floor (9.800).
